Folks - we did it. We finally made it to the final episode of this season. It’s been a whole year since we sat down to start this season adventure, and we’re at the end of a season we’ll always remember for Pony Therapy. I mean, there’s so many lessons and thoughts to take away - for example, never meet your idols. Because Star Swirl the Bearded is a complete jerk who is totally out of touch with how friendship works in current Equestria. But even more importantly is the fact that we can’t face darkness alone, and we need help from others to get through. And wow, we’re tearing up just typing those words in, because after a really awful year, it’s a message that really rings true. Hold your friends tight and get ready for one last battle as we discuss “Shadow Play, Part 2” this week on Macintosh & Maud!

It’s finale time for Season 7 and wow do we have one heck of an exposition bomb dropped on us from the very beginning. I mean, it’d just be lying if we said we didn’t put together the fact that all the legendary pony stories we talked about this season were gonna get referenced later. But they start in on the legends and drop a lore bomb for the first act of this episode, cramming as much info as they possibly can into their 30 minute cartoon. It’s a little sloppy for My Little Pony, but it doesn’t hide the fact that Twilight Sparkle is finally going to have to reckon with how she thinks she’s hot shit. Starlight might be a bit jealous, but when your best friend comes to visit and then spends a whole day hanging out and chatting with Maud Pie - something’s a bit off. Starlight’s still dealing with those past friendship feelings something fierce, and her plan to magic her way out of it might be a bit much. If you’ve watched along with us this whole time, you know that Pinkie Pie can…be a lot. So it’s no surprise this week when Pinkie’s delivery of a pie in celebration of Rainbow Dash’s 73rd Wonderbolt Practice Session might get mixed reviews from Dash. And if it were an isolated case, we might be able to forgive our favorite jock pegasus. But the lengths Rainbow Dash will go to dispose of a pie and the further lengths Pinkie will go to prove her pies are disappearing - it’s a very, very complicated process with a lot of collateral damage, particularly a lovable little tortoise who keeps eating whole pies. In the course of making these seasons, we tend to find a lot of joy, laughter, and silliness from this show, but on occasion it hits right at our hearts. To take a villain, a pony that Twilight cannot defeat, and instead try to help her rediscover the magic of friendship, just cuts through whatever cynicism and coldness you might feel about friendship and love for others. Rarity's dealing with Cadence's hair emergency while the rest are treating the "Games Inspector" to the time of her life. At least, that's what they think they're doing, until things get very, very weird.

You would think that a 13-episode season of a children’s animated show wouldn’t have filler episodes. You’d be wrong. Then again, we do get some super silly time with all of the Mane Six's pets, and the Cutie Mark Crusaders get some solid time. And hey - at least it's better than "Spike at Your Service."

We love Spike and his adorable dragon face. He's super helpful and a loyal dragon assistant to everypony. But Spike's also a little boring if we have to hear his stories for too long. And this dragon code he has - it's WAY too intense for a baby dragon to be holding over his head. Maybe we just need to let Spike be Spike. Otherwise, the whole city of Ponyville could be in deep, deep trouble.

Its purpose was to teach the lost art of aerial equine acrobatics and to insure that the handful of ponies who graduated were the best in the world. They succeeded. Today, the land of Equestria calls it Wonderbolts Academy. The flyers call it: TOP GUN.
OK, not exactly, but Dash and friends remind us of some other hotshot fighter jocks from pop culture. Though Dash isn’t willing to cut corners to get ahead, and that might just mean she has to leave the Wonderbolts behind...

Fluttershy may be scared of most things, but she's awesome when it comes to training montages.
We all know Fluttershy is...well...pretty shy. But the constant mocking during flight school was too much to handle. Hence why Fluttershy, a straight up Pegasus with wings, almost never flies. Unfortunately, Rainbow Dash needs ALL hands on deck to make sure they get water from Ponyville to Cloudsdale. Especially with a bad case of pony flu going around. That means it's time for Angel and the other woodland creatures to bust out the weights and training equipment to get Fluttershy ready for action in maybe the BEST montage of the whole series. No joke.

It's time for the Great Dragon Migration, but after his friends tease him about being the cutest dragon ever, Spike is feeling a bit insecure. Unfortunately, the only way for him to connect is to hang out with teenage dragons. Which, now that we think of it, isn't that different from regular teenagers. Still, the best thing about a kinda boring episode is the ridiculous three-pony dragon costume that Twilight, Rarity and Rainbow Dash use to "blend in."

Time-travel fans, rejoice. If ever My Little Pony were to cross with Quantum Leap and The Terminator, this is it. Though Ponyville's idea of time travel is far more about identifying Twilight Sparkle's obsession with understanding what's going on around her. There's a lot of wackiness, but also a sinister anxiety that Twilight has to come to grips with in order not to go insane. And also, if your future self comes to warn you about something, maybe don't ask so many questions.

We won't lie though - the coming together of friends like Clover the Clever, Smart Cookie and Private Pansy got us in all the feels. It's a good episode, and a nice message for the tail end of winter...

MLP S1E21: "Over a Barrel"

OK. OK. We tried real hard to remember that this is a children's show. That this is a cartoon for kids to watch in the afternoon and laugh and be inspired by. We tried to just enjoy the ridiculous bits: Applejack treating an apple tree like a baby; the hilarious difference between "wild" west dances and "mild" west dances; the agreement between buffalo and pony settlers that Pinkie's unity song might be the worst thing they've ever seen.
BUT. We've already had one episode that dealt with some touchy cultural stereotypes, but this one is almost worse. Because it suggests that somehow indigenous buffalo are somehow in the wrong for not wanting pony settlers to take over their entire stampeding grounds. Which just sends the wrong message.
So, if Princess Celestia is listening - maybe our lesson this episode is: let's skip this episode the next time around...

And Rarity stands up for her friend even when Fluttershy's desparately trying to look bad. All we know is, that if Photo Finish started pulling that on us, we'd just tell her exactly what she says to everyone:

Whatever little respect Macintosh managed to garner from Rarity's previous escapades is pretty much shot after this episode. I mean, you get wings to go see your friend put on her best performance, only to outshine her at every turn and decide your beautiful (fake) wings should win the Best Young Flier's Competition? That's just wrong.
In the meantime, Macintosh and Maud are smiling like little kids after watching Fluttershy play for laughs this episode as she desperately tries to be more assertive. As for Rainbow Dash...well let's just say performance anxiety sucks.
Oh, and Caramel, a/k/a Lancelot, a/k/a Crème Brûlée - we see you. We don't know what your game is, but you better watch it, buddy. You can't just magically turn into a Pegasus overnight. You're officially on notice.

Twilight Sparkle seems to ignore that advice at her own peril. I mean, how often do you have to get flattened by a door before you think, "maybe I ought to just believe my friend Pinkie?"
The answer appears to be at least twice, along with a variety of other injuries.
Also, when Twilight gets angry, she turns into a white, flaming nega-Twi that appears to be able to destroy universes. So, maybe tread lightly, everypony...

But none of that gets rid of great moments from this episode, including Fluttershy's extensive knowledge of draping and sewing, or Hoity-Toity's eerie resemblance to our most famous fashion vampire. And, of course, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention Rarity's ability to amp up the drama in every situation.
