The finale has arrived, the end of the road for all of our characters. As far as series finales go, this isn’t the worst we’ve ever seen. Everyone gets a nice send-off, there’s some genuinely sweet moments, and they nail the final moments. But after an entire final season of pointless escapades with no greater meaning, and a total refusal to go for the wildness the show has been known for, we’re left with some standard grade relief. Once again we have jumped to a plotline that might have been entertaining back in Season 2 or 3 but now just reads as a desperate ploy to save Ethel. And still, this show can’t get Ethel Muggs right, because she once again has to be the frumpy loner no one will ever love. Setting aside the fact that there’s still only five episodes left of this forsaken show, Shannon Purser is a delight and a treasure and Riverdale has just sort of thrown her and this character under a bus at any convenient moment. So despite some small hints at what’s to come, we wasted one more hour trying to justify Ethel as a trauma prop. Do better, Riverdale. As our escape from this show drifts further and further away, we’re entering the real Red Scare as Clifford and Penelope Blossom begin their play for control of the town. Hiram and Hermoine are back for a visit too, along with, and I cannot believe I’m saying this, Geraldine Grundy. Which leads us back to the idea that the first season is replaying itself, in the 1950’s, to happen all over again. Perhaps it’s a setup for a reconciliation of timelines. Just as we thought Riverdale might have turned a corner, they took this week’s episode as a chance to completely undo one of the few good storylines from the earlier timeline. Instead of Kevin Keller having a loving, supportive dad who wanted nothing other than his son to be happy, we get this absolutely disgusting display of homophobia. And to what end? None that we can see, other than maybe to hammer home how much Archie is still Archie in this universe. The meta-narrative may be pulling together somewhat, and Betty’s pouting is adorable and absolutely on point. There is nearly 15 minutes of pure exposition just crammed into various scenes and lines, all of which is a rehash of everything that has already happened this season. It’s as though the writers on this show do not believe the audience is smart enough to actually track the plot of this show. Which is probably fair, considering just how bonkers they’ve decided to make things. This time, though, it undercuts some really fun storylines and bits, all in the name of redundant storytelling. We had to take some time off from our season after some life events, and now we’re back to finish off this season. And this episode does very little to make any progress in any real way. I mean, yes, there’s some wild biblical plagues being unleashed on the town of Riverdale, but as for everyone else? They’re just continuing to be their very boring, predictable selves, like Veronica, who decides to just break into Sondheim at a celebration of her friends’ wedding. Except for Jughead, he’s dealing with the fact that weird visions are coming to take his stories and oh yeah, there’s another one of him watching as he dies. Because he’s a firstborn child. This show didn’t break us with an organ-harvesting cult. Didn’t destroy us with Edgar Evernever launching to heaven in an Evel Knievel rocket. No, instead, it’s this episode, a boring, lackluster musical episode that simply took all the tension and through-lines of this season and flattened them as thin as a piece of paper. I mean, who cares who TBK is? Why bother creating parallels with the Core Four’s trauma and Percival’s attack on Riverdale? Anything for this show’s creator to introduce another failed musical for which, by the way, he wrote the book. This is one of Riverdale’s worst episodes yet, and that’s saying something folks. For the first time we can remember, a haunting is afoot in Riverdale, with ghosts wreaking havoc and maiming workers as Tabitha tries to keep Pop’s safe from Percival’s bulldozers. Yes, that is a sentence describing things that actually happen on this television show. But there’s deeper questions to ask, particularly with respect to Betty’s newly unearthed trauma and an FBI agent that seems very eager to learn more about her. Also, Cheryl’s discovering from her rediscovered yearning for Heather that she might just be a witch after all, in the most unsurprising turn in this show yet. After an all-timer bonkers episode, this week’s Riverdale reigned things all the way back in by forcing all of our characters inside as a thick, menacing fog rolled in. And while that leads to a filler-adjacent episode, there’s nonetheless a lot of character development that’s surprisingly smart and thoughtful here. Veggie calls it quits (for now) because they’re dealing with a toxic past that needs to be addressed. Betty finally opens up about her darkest moment with TBK, and gets even closer to Archie. Cheryl finds a little bit of catharsis with an angelic Mumsie, and Kevin gets a sweet visit from Marmaduke himself to help him face down his demons. But the one truly wild moment we get is discovering that Jughead is to Iron Man as Tabitha is to Doctor Strange, and there’s a little bit of predestination for one Jughead Jones. This wasn’t really a remarkable episode of television, but it certainly had some trademark ridiculous moments. But there’s so much more ridiculousness in this episode, like Percival Pickens taking up residence in the Babylonium, or Archie doing carny strongman stunts while Jughead barks him up. This episode might not be the best, but it’s certainly weird, and for that, we have to applaud it. For a brief moment, we thought this show might be so bad it’s good. Riverdale had stumbled into a truly weird and wonderful storyline, making a superhero show out of nothing by sheer force of will and determined wild writing choices. But, alas, this week’s episode was just as cringeworthy as its teaser suggested. Our town super-mutants are fun as heck and together solving another mystery. But once again, Toni has to be made into the sole representative for racial tensions in Riverdale, and it’s done with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. There were a lot of great opportunities to tell an interesting story this week, but our writers appear to have completely missed that mark. Strap in for a bumpy ride as we discuss “Chapter 104: The Serpent Queen’s Gambit” this week on The Doghouse.

Riverdale appears to have its villain for now, and somehow, despite all the crazy, he’s stealing the show. Anytime a show like this can absolutely nail a character with no moral compass and no desire for compromise and mix in social commentary to boot, that’s a heck of a job. In fact our one big complaint is that it’s very muddy on what this “superhero” arc is meant to be. But at the very least, this show has us intrigued, and that’s saying something when this show has let us down too many times before. Every one of the core four get tons of character development in the most ridiculous ways, and the cocktail is potent. This is by far the most ridiculous episode of the show we’ve seen to date and somehow, some way - it works. To be perfectly honest, we weren’t thrilled to have Riverdale back. We just got done with a weird mini-event and a lot of unanswered questions from Season 5. What we got, though, was the most wheels-off, absolutely wild season premiere we’ve seen in ages, and that’s saying something. Archie and Betty got superpowers from getting blown up, Cheryl’s dealing with witchcraft and her Nana’s meddling, Toni and Fangs are about to have a gang war, and Veronica puts out a hit on Hiram. In fact, the least eventful thing about this episode, is Jughead, whose hearing loss is dealt with pretty honestly and forthright - for now. If this is how they want to approach this season, we are all for it. We’re full dark no stars with “Chapter 101: Unbelievable" this week on The Doghouse.

In yet another victory at the absolute jaws of defeat, Riverdale pulled out every possible stop for the 100th episode and ended this arc with one of their best episodes in a long time. It’s not just the return of all our lost characters, or the perfection of the Reggies and their pettiness. It’s the fact that they proved they can take a storyline, tie it into the show as a whole, and really drill down into something amazing, entertaining, and a little bit tantalizing for our second half of the season. Which makes it all the worse that they wasted our time with this mini-arc, because none of the rest of these episodes served any purpose to our end result this week. This could have been a masterful event that threaded a wild ride through a spin on the town with Pop’s, but instead it just left us mad at their laziness in the writer’s room. After three episodes of constant shrugging with some wildly weird moments, Riverdale decided to drop this episode, a meandering, pandering mess that tries to retcon Cheryl Freaking Blossom as some historically persecuted figure through time. Look, it’s one thing to confront the past of the Blossom family and how the town of Riverdale wronged them. But to suddenly flip this into some tragic morality play about the mistreatment of Cheryl is just beyond the pale at this point. At least on occasion they decide to have some fun with it - there’s solid acting from a lot of our favorite actors in the show, and we get a brief but mildly entertaining appearance from the queen of the teen witches, Sabrina Spellman. But more than any episode this arc, we’re really, really struggling to understand why any of this is important. Not to mention we got done shouting at how terribly this show treated Toni Topaz as a character and they just dumped her right back in the garbage bin. This episode was actually very easy to talk about, because at the end of the day, it was just really, really good. I mean, they did so much this whole season to set us up for this episode, and then paid it off, fully. There was care and detail in the staging of Betty and Alice’s struggle to find comfort and truth in a grief-stricken family, using the absolute perfect musical to get that story across. Add to it the story points of Varchie confronting the truth that they’re just wanting different things, Tabitha and Jughead making things official, and Toni making peace with Cheryl to help Britta find her way, and you’ve got one heck of an episode. Which is a double-edged sword, because it proves you can stick to a plan if you really try. So why not try more, Riverdale? Wowzers, they really threw everything at this episode, huh? What’s even wilder is that Riverdale did all of this while actually managing to connect the dots we knew they could connect this whole time, despite all the laziness in their writing. In fact, it’s almost so well done at times to make us want to throw things. Yes, you managed to pull off some great stories, now WHY WEREN’T YOU DOING THIS THE WHOLE TIME?! Unless, of course, you’re listening to us complain about your show - which is entirely possible given some of the lines that are very reminiscent of discussions we’ve had. Josie’s gone, and things are back to depressing normal. And in most seasons of Riverdale, this is where we’d start shouting at the show to get a move on and wrap up some stories. But this time, they managed to actually do just that, putting Jughead on the bumpy road to recovery while catching up with Betty, who’s finding herself way too deep into investigating the Lonely Highway. Cheryl and Kevin are in a full-on cult, and Veronica plays Chad so hard it might just knock him out of the show forever. But the highlight of the night is helping Archie and Eric exorcise some trauma and reveal some of the hurt and struggle they’ve been hanging on to. Robin Givens, Riverdale’s own Mayor McCoy, took the helm for this episode and did a beautiful tribute to the pain and hurt of Archie’s platoon, and the peace both he and they could find with justice served. This is not an episode of Riverdale. It’s really a back-door pilot for a new Josie & The Pussycats TV series. And we’re actually cool with that because this is better character development from these writers than we’ve seen in years. In about 5 or 6 minutes they manage to re-establish all three Pussycats, make them into full-fledged characters, and even have Josie sing a Celine Dion song. But for all the fun flashbacks and genuinely heartfelt moments, these writers can’t help but be lazy with the tropes, the writing, and the weirdness. So much so that we had to start a counter for every moment they phoned it in. We had everything lined up for a great episode. Alice Cooper herself, Mädchen Amick, is behind the camera (and in front), and we’ve got another triptych story to tie up some loose ends for Archie, Betty, and Jughead. And while the first two are pretty great, if a little rushed, it’s that Jughead part that left us scratching our heads. I mean, what was the point of all the buildup if we were just going to find out Jug fell down a sinkhole and was covered in rats? It’s wild, it’s unbelievable, but it doesn’t really get to any root for him, and it left a big anticlimactic hole for his story. We’re just going to have to cling to tracking down a killer and Archie finally reckoning with his past for our storylines this season - everything else is headed toward the dumpster. Archie’s efforts to get Corporal Jackson some help are starting to become far more personal than he realized, Veronica and Reggie are building the easiest case ever for the SEC, and Betty and Tabitha have an actual, honest-to-god plan to track down some truckers. We won’t mention that little subplot where Cheryl’s just outright homophobic and Kevin’s sucked into a new cult (never, ever change Riverdale writers). What a horribly executed episode of TV. Seriously, we’ve had complaints about Riverdale before but this one takes the cake. First of all, you make Kevin, Fangs, and Toni’s decision to co-parent a child and Kang’s engagement into a fucking exposition bomb that just implodes everyone in the friend group. Then, you get Cheryl F*%$@ng Blossom having a key party to both try to distract from her sad life and also maybe blow up some of the romance budding in this hell town. It’s gross, it’s insensitive, and it’s proof that the writers of this show couldn’t care less about queer characters and non-traditional relationships. AND YET - we’re still excited to see how Archie, Betty, and Jughead’s stories pan out. Because this show can never really let us get away. It’s Bughead that’s left limping to the finish line, spending the first half of the episode waxing poetic about innocence and Jellybean instead of, I don’t know, doing something? There’s some pretty hasty character wrap-ups thrown in right here at the end, for sure. Still, we’re mostly fine with it and ready to see what happens in the time-jump ahead. Lest we forget this show is Riverdale, they delivered a real dud this week. We could’ve slow played Charles, let Jellybean give us some better context on why she made videos, and give us a lot more intrigue to bring Betty and Jughead back from a time jump. Instead, Bughead got some of the worst, most boring dialogue this show’s ever produced, which, I mean, who’s shocked. Veronica finally sticks it to Daddy, but about a season-and-a-half too late, and Choni are both bonkers and also irredeemable at this point. That leaves Archie, who is a little overwrought, but KJ Apa found a new acting gear and was incredibly compelling this episode - it’s pretty awesome. Here’s hoping we get more of that soon; for now, we’re talking “Chapter 7: The Preppy Murders” this week on The Doghouse.

It’s finally prom night in Riverdale and you know what that means - murder. Well, OK, maybe not murder, but definitely creepy videotapes from our newest villain, “The Auteur”. But honestly, this season premiere in name only is actually tender and heartbreaking and kind of healthy? Cheryl’s still the worst, but Toni’s family drama was a refreshing twist on the typical “forbidden love trope.” It’s the breakup of Varchie, though, that really felt mature and wonderful in this episode, as KJ and Camila really get to shine while reconciling some very real feelings. All while Bughead is dealing with a seedy snuff film festival slash rave. It can only happen on Riverdale, and we’re back to discuss “Chapter 77: Climax” this week on The Doghouse.

Meet an unexpected season finale. With production shutting down, the showrunners were missing key scenes to provide another full episode of Riverdale. Again, though, unexpected restrictions make this show better, as we’re left this week with a great big question mark of a cliffhanger - if Mr. Honey wasn’t our big bad, exactly who is pulling all these magnetic tape strings? This also might be one of the best written episodes of the show so far, with tons of solid meta-jokes and a revelation of just how twisted the Core Four / Main Six’s moral compass has become. Is Mr. Honey truly ruining our little mystery gang’s lives? Or is there something much darker and deeper going on with these kids?. Riverdale has always been inspired by David Lynch, and the first season had heavy reference to Twin Peaks as it set up the mystery of Jason Blossom. So it’s no surprise they might lean into those comparisons for an episode as the fallout of Stonewall Prep, simulated murder tapes, and Barchie’s kiss weight heavy on the teen gang. Things are so weird in Riverdale right now that CHERYL BLOSSOM is giving solid, poignant relationship advice. Meanwhile, Reggie’s being con-man Reggie, Veronica makes a wildly wrong assumption, and Ethel Muggs is back…to be creepy, we guess. Riverdale is back with the anticipated (or dreaded) musical episode, and this year…they’re doing Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The verdict? It wasn’t as bad as it could have been, but we probably should’ve done a different musical. Kevin Keller utters a line in the first ten minutes that “Hedwig isn’t a niche musical” and all we’re thinking is, “YES IT IS THAT’S THE ENTIRE POINT?!?!?” In fact, maybe it’s just because we’re prudes or parents but, uh, Principal Honey is right on this one, even if he is enjoying taking these kids down a bit too much. Yet despite all of this, and despite the show faking us out on making this a Kevin-centered episode, the drama between the Core Four and the long-awaited romance between Betty and Archie was maybe some of the best work they’ve ever done, flashbacks and all. Wade through the awful with us to get to the great this week on The Doghouse!

This week, Angel, the creator of Finding Atlas (To Have and to Hold), joins us for a crossover with Macintosh & Maud Haven’t Seen What?! to watch and review the 2001 film version of Hedwig and the Angry Inch before Riverdale comes back this week for their Hedwig musical episode. We’re getting very nervous about how Riverdale is going to handle this, given their track history visiting gratuitous, awful trauma on their queer characters. Because Hedwig is a complicated story about queerness, trauma, love, pain, and redemption, and with a singular vision of its creator, John Cameron Mitchell. It’s an outstanding film that’s both firmly rooted in the time it was made while also being incredibly universal and poignant. In fact, it’s probably the best rock opera ever produced, and we don’t say that lightly. So before Riverdale takes a crack at it, go watch the film and listen to our review of an amazing, profound, and extremely fun film in The Doghouse!

A bottle episode to wrap things up before hiatus? Don’t mind if we do! This episode tied all the loose ends into a neat package that still managed to surprise and delight us. We knew Forsythe I was coming back, we knew DuPont’s shadiness with the original Quill & Skull was going to come back to haunt the story, but we were not expecting Donna to get away with it and be put on ice for future seasons. There’s so many small, impactful moments in this episode that make the first half of the season completely worth the trouble. Well, except for Cheryl and Kevin, but apparently they’re not actual characters any more. Grab the key, lock the door, and prepare yourself for the smuggest detective work on TV on this week’s episode of The Doghouse!

Were we expecting Riverdale to put a ton of thought and consideration into how they put their master plot together? Pffft, no, have you seen this show? That’s what made this week so surprising - they pulled from the past, put a bunch of elements together, and managed to surprise us without really surprising us at all. Yes, Jughead lives, and yes, Betty definitely didn’t kill him, but the show has pivoted to a “whydunnit” and that has drawn the audience in even deeper. We’re always a bit cautious with the show but if they keep this up, we could be in for their best season yet. Dive into the drama with us this week in The Doghouse!

Wow, a good episode! No really, it’s a solid, no-filler, all-killer (heh) episode! The show took a giant nose dive for a few weeks there with some absolutely bizarre choices, but now that we’re caught up with the main storyline, everything suddenly feels good again. The core…three are reunited as Betty tries to panic her way to being free and clear of Jughead’s death and spirals wildly out of control. Meanwhile Archie might be going to the Navy, Veronica makes peace with Hiram, Mary Andrews said gay rights, and Alice Cooper is suddenly a hell of a savvy parent. All that and more this week on The Doghouse!

Yet again, Riverdale has somehow pulled victory from the jaws of defeat by finally, fi-na-lly giving us the Jughead answers we so desparately needed. Forgot Veronica’s weird “I’m going to keep you alive with spite” strategy, or Cheryl and Toni faking a threesome with Hermosa to catch her on the ropes. Archie should have sold the construction business and Jughead might not be a good writer. But it really doesn’t matter now that we’re finally caught up on the mystery of how Jughead Jones got killed. We’re breathing a sigh of relief for the show this week on The Doghouse.

Well, they did it. They sunk to the bottom of the barrel this week. Archie’s on some wacky path to mercenaries and murder plots, Jughead’s in a “duel” with Bret using the most boring tests ever, Betty’s on the hunt for clues with a suddenly clueless Alice, and Veronica turned on a dime after meeting with her “not-forced-at-all-for-ratings-friendship” with Katy Keene. And if Toni avenging Cheryl by drugging and assaulting him against his will for blackmail isn’t bad enough, how about leaning into rape culture by painting Donna as a manipulative liar? It’s one thing to be tone deaf; it’s another to make your ignorance and callousness the focus of the plot. For an episode about honor, this show doesn’t seem to show a lot of it. We’re getting on our soapboxes this week in The Doghouse.

We’re feeling slightly better than last week, but it’s a low bar to meet, to be honest. Archie’s being his typical caring, Archie self while his uncle is acting shady AF. And Bughead is on some next-level plotting that we’re still not exactly sure of, though we’re pretty certain Jughead isn’t dead. But it’s the absolute laziness of pitting Veronica and Cheryl against Hiram and then exploiting Kevin in exactly the same way we always have that just sustained our rage for what this show is turning into. We’re curious for the plot, but we’ve had it with the characters. Let’s chat before our study crunch this week in The Doghouse.

Hey, remember those good things we said about the show in the mid-season finale? Yeah, forget it. This show is hot, hot garbage, and we are here to YELL ABOUT IT. Archie and Frank are actually a solid pair until Frank is selling pills to Archie’s teammates, and Jughead’s story is getting murkier and a little more interesting. But Betty seems to be careening into killing her crown-beanied beaux while Veronica is a 17-year old in the rum business. AND THEN THERE’S CHERYL BLOSSOM. The writers of this show decided to scrap all of the work they did in the previous two episodes to let Cheryl heal, and turned her into a conniving, manipulative shell of a character, and everyone around her, including Toni, gets dragged down with her. It’s what makes this episode go from meh to rage. Come have a little Riverdale counseling with us this week in The Doghouse.

Starting this season, we knew that Archie’s uncle was going to be appearing, that Jughead would find his grandfather, and that somehow, some way, Alice Cooper was going to escape The Farm. And all of that happened, but not nearly in the order we had thought. This season has been about digging deeper, about getting to core pressure points for our characters and poking them constantly. For once, the gang has been given perspective, and while many are continuing the path they’ve already pursued, they’re also struggling to understand. We thought the loss of Fred Andrews might ruin this show; instead, it seems they’ve re-doubled their efforts to make something a little deeper and a little more subtle, even if Edgar Evernever plans to fly a self-made rocket off an abandoned hotel roof. That, and the fact that Betty Cooper might have just unleashed a force we haven’t seen since season one. We’re tying together loose threads for some arts and crafts this week in The Doghouse!
