Cassandra grew up less than 2 miles from where she and Ronnie decided to open Vital Life Chiropractic. For her it is coming full circle back to her roots.

Ronnie is a native of Akron, Ohio, we to high school in Lithia Springs, Georgia. As turns out, Ronnie and Cassandra attended many of the same events in High School and never met.

This theme continued into college. Ronnie and Cassandra knew each other but never got together in college. Finally, years later, Ronnie called Cassandra. But it wasn’t the Cassandra he meant to call. He was trying to call his then boss. As fate stepped in, they got together and the rest is history.

Ronnie completed his chiropractic doctoral degree at Life University. As Cassandra and Ronnie look to launch Vital Life Chiropractic, Cassandra is learning the business aspects of the company while Ronnie works in the community to build relationships with future patients.

Samantha (Sam) and Scott Darling are history and travel buffs who spent a few years nomadic before opening the Uphill House B&B.

Scott is a graduate of New Mexico State University and Sam went to Ole Miss. They met in Arkansas while serving in the education corps. In 2012, Sam got the bug to become an entrepreneur and settled on a B&B in Virginia.

Sam and Scott are craft beer enthusiasts and love Virginia for their many craft beer breweries. The B&B is also located in the middle of wine country, so Scott and Sam have been working long and hard learning about the art of wine. They’ve also begun to explore a love of whiskey.

When they aren’t sleeping indoors, Scott and Sam enjoy camping along with hiking, kayaking, biking, and rock climbing. They also love to travel and enjoy the fact that with business partners they can really trust (Sam’s parents) they have plenty of opportunities to see the world.

After meeting and traveling around for the education corps from 2007 to 2014, Scott and Sam decided to settle down and open a business. Sam began to research possible businesses for her and Scott in 2012.

When Sam discussed some ideas with her parents, now also their business partners, David and Suzanne, they were interested in starting something new. In fact, the idea of a Bed & Breakfast was actually Suzanne’s.

The B&B was built in 2010 and purchased by Sam, Scott, Suzanne, and David in 2014. A more modern B&B, Uphill House sits in the middle of the history of the beginning of the United States. Sam and Suzanne serve as Culinary Operations and Housekeeping, Scott does Maintenance and Finance, and David is all things Tourism.

Together all four help with Marketing, Advertising, and Landscape/Yard Work. Scott and Sam have taken the concept of Together 24/7 and added a whole new layer to it.

Frank is a tennis buff, former tennis pro from Maine. Frank studied architecture and relocated to Colorado. He began to work for his former father-in-law and moved up in the company.

Tessa is originally from the Philippines and relocated to Colorado with her family. She was a contractor and interior decorator, but never crossed paths with Frank in their professional lives.

Frank and Tessa saw each other across a crowded room. Tessa knew right away she and Frank were meant to be and she set about getting her guy. That was 22 years ago and they have been together in business and life almost since the beginning.

Frank and Tessa began their entrepreneurial life together in network marketing. They succeeded in their first company and created a team of people, many of whom remained with them over the years. They saw success is several companies, not so much success in several more and eventually stepped out of network marketing.

A few years ago, they were approached by the CEO of a nutrition based company that was looking to rebrand and needed trainers with experience. First, Frank needed to lose about 80 pounds on the program and then they set about creating the new training for the branding.

It was from their years of experience and success in Network Marketing that Frank and Tessa decided to create IntellaTrinsic. Seeing a need for coaching and training throughout the Network Marketing world, Frank and Tessa work together to get those choosing the Network Marketing path to entrepreneurship on the right path.

Larry is a Midwestern farm boy. He was raised in Indiana and joined the Army at the ripe old age of 17. Larry retired after 20 years of service. He went on to work at the US Department of Defense as a contractor before becoming a hypnotist. HE enjoys his roles as husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and mentor. Sondra was raised in Central Indiana and wasn’t allowed to date until she was 16. That’s when she and Larry met and the rest is history. Sondra worked as a government contractor for the Department of Transportation.

Carmen hails from our nation’s capital and Darius is from South Carolina. Carmen has a Master’s Degree in Communications and Darius is an Industrial Engineer, a career that led him to the path of owning his own real estate investing business.

Real Estate was the answer and the Britts started as wholesalers, going door to door talking to people who were on the verge of losing their homes in hopes of giving them a way out. Then they decided on rehabs but soon realized if you are wielding a hammer you can’t sit on a beach and earn money.

Taking all their knowledge and experience, Darius and Carmen created Brade Street Properties, a real estate investment firm that partners investors with flippers that need capital. Everyone gets what they want and need, including Darius and Carmen, who get their laptop lifestyle.

Amanda was born in Louisiana, then moved to Oklahoma, Arizona, and Florida as a child. She returned to Arizona as an adult. David hails from Chicago and is a big sports fan.

It was a need for extreme flexibility in her schedule that started Amanda searching for something she could do. She found an under-served market in women who needed bra-fitting and lingerie and weren’t “average.” She added in her studies to create a safe space for women and couples to ask about various areas of sexual health.

Bodie and Mitchell have been married since 1992 and in business together since 1998.

Bodie is a SoCal girl. A graduate of San Diego State University, Bodie actually started in the Real Estate business at the ripe old age of 12, helping her mother with rental properties.

Mitchell grew up in Bismarck, North Dakota where he studied architecture and engineering. Probably somewhere in the middle of a North Dakota winter, Mitchell decided he wanted to move to California and landed in Temecula.

Mitchell and Bodie have 2 sons. Bodie was very involved in various committees in their school as well as the varsity and JV football programs.

After working for a few architecture firms in southern California, Mitchell created his own company. Unfortunately, the real estate slow down in the 90’s saw him working for another firm during the day while building Mitchell J Architecture at night. In 1998, he went full time and full force into his own firm with Bodie joining and he hasn’t looked back.

In addition to traditional architecture work, they design wireless networks for all the major cell phone carriers and have worked with the Coast Guard, Border Patrol and Homeland Security. They are currently working on a dedicated First Responder Network for LA County.

Michael and Debbye have been a couple for nearly 50 years. High school sweethearts, they had a long courtship (7 years) when Michael went off to Westpoint and then served in the army.

Rocky made it all, lost is all and made it all back again, bigger and better than before. After unknowingly getting into a Ponzi scheme, Rocky lost his money, home, and family. Things did not look good.

He rebuilt his life focusing on his own physical health first. When he began winning bodybuilding championships, Rocky took the words that inspired him and began to put them on clothing to inspire others.

Rocky credits all the wonderful things in his life to his attitude of gratitude. He is grateful for everything in his life now and grateful for the things to come as if they are here, right now.

Cheryl is a certified personal trainer who loves working with people. Her background is in business management and business finance. Cheryl and Rocky met when she was a trainer at Rocky’s gym.

Adetokunboh (Ali) Afonja was born in Birmingham, AL, moved with his family to Lagos, Nigeria. After seven years, the Afonja family moved back to the states and settled in NY. Ali was always into sports and physical fitness. In the US Navy, he became the physical trainer for his division and later went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in psychology and his Master’s in sport’s psychology.

Stephanie Jackson Afonja is originally from Hampton, VA. Growing up, Stephanie was very much into her schoolwork and church. Heather is from Green Bay, WI while Jonathan hails from just outside London, England. Heather and Jonathan met when they were both working at a summer camp. After falling in love and moving back to the US, they started in Colorado before moving back to Wisconsin after their first child was born.

Tal is all about developing great life hacks. The idea for Shlocker, a locker for the shower, came from his frustration with roommates and dorm-mates that stole his rather expensive shampoo (Tal has great hair!) and used his soap, which is just gross.

Shlocker is a portable locker for the shower that actually locks, too. With his manufacturing background and international connections, Tal created the product and began the manufacturing process. Stephanie’s strength lies in sales and marketing and she is bringing Shlocker to consumers through direct retail and wholesale to stores.

Dr. Don enjoys powerlifting, staying young (and helping others do the same) the Dallas Cowboys. That’s an assumption because he was once their chiropractor, but we figure he does! Dr. Don is all about health and fitness.

Heather Havenwood has also become a fitness buff. She is a serial entrepreneur, health advocate and body builder. She, like Dr. Don is also a Texan.

Dr. Don and Heather became engaged in August, 2016 and we look forward to their upcoming nuptials and a very long life together.

Dr. Don is a chiropractor and Heather is an online entrepreneur running 3 companies, including one with Dr. Don. Heather’s marketing and promotion skills combined with Dr. Don’s ability to heal bodies, especially people over 40 as hormones start to go crazy, combined to create their healing center in Austin, Texas.

In addition to chiropractic, Dr. Don created a line of Anti-Aging, Life Extension and Weight Loss products. Along with the Skinny Beam laser weight loss machine, he is helping people regain youth. Heather has taken Dr. Don’s mission and the E2 Lab products to the masses. She has made his supplements the go-to product for body builders and has been building the line in the weight loss arena. If you’re considering moving your business back home or starting your business in your home, you have to weigh the pros and cons. And some situations can go either way. For example, with a home office, if your clients used to come to your office, you now have to choose – come to your home, go to their office or meet in the middle. Could be a pro or a con.

Sharon grew up in New Jersey and then moved to Northern Virginia in High School. Sharon’s fondest memories revolve around food, family gatherings, travelling internationally and cooking. Holladay House is a Bed and Breakfast built in the 1800’s. Filled with history from the beginning of the US, Sharon and Sam wanted to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and decided that running a bed and breakfast hit all the buttons. Sam loves history, Sharon loves cooking for others and together they created Holladay House.

Continue to create personal experiences together outside of the business. Just like empty nesters try to reconnect after the kids are gone, keep creating personal experiences along the way so you don’t have to “reconnect.”

In a Kosher kitchen, meat and dairy must be kept separate. You cannot mix dairy and meat. Also, bacon and pork in any form is not Kosher. Barry shouldn’t be eating bacon. But he does. Can’t speak to whether or not Sharon eats bacon.

Jan grew up with a complete lack of spice in life. Her childhood was spent in non-diverse towns in West Virginia and Ohio. She does have strong values instilled by her family and her Western Pennsylvania roots and Pittsburgh Steelers and chipped ham hold strongly in her core values.

Spice came with Jeremy. With a foundation of stability, Jeremy brings a bit of unpredictability, new foods and flavors and an openness to new ways of living. Jeremy is a creative guy who loves to improvise, speak, teach, invent and play with Legos. A stint as a govy or government employee proved it wasn’t the career path for him.

After a few years, we decided to launch our own barter exchange (check out the course we developed for anyone wanting to start an exchange at www.CertifiedBarterSpecialist.com) and finally, we designed software for barter exchanges to use. So we know barter.

But while the salesperson of your local barter exchange may tell you it is perfect for your business, it may or may not be. Or maybe you are thinking of doing a few direct trades with another business, and that can be great…or not.

Laurie and Dan met 33 years ago on a freeway in Los Angeles. You know when that is the start of the relationship, it is not going to be conventional. Dan wanted to know if the sun roof in Laurie’s car was a plus. Turns out they got off the same exit and Dan asked Laurie out. They became business partners a year later, but didn’t get married until 2000. It was an on again, off again relationship in love, but stayed in business together the whole time.

Laurie created Laurie Burton Training. She has been on stage, television and film for over 30 years and has taught directing and acting at USC School of Cinematic Arts.

Dan’s extensive experience in workshops, creative councils and community building events was a great addition to Laurie Burton Training. The training went from always one-to-one to larger seminars and conferences.

Mike and Megan met in college at Brigham Young University. They are married and have been together for 16 years and in business for 5 years.

Mike grew up in Meridian, Idaho and went to BYU to study family therapy. Realizing that family therapy was not a good fit (but he uses his education every day in their large family) he has been a window washer, in construction, in computer sales and now works with Megan.

There is television commercial where everything gets screwed up and the person that screwed up stands there and says “sorry” They go through a bunch of screw ups and the last person, a tattoo artist grates on me every time I hear the commercial. It’s not what she said, it is how she said it.

There are a lot of speech patterns and habits that can make us sound unprofessional or downgrade our message. We’re not talking about physical impediments, but actual bad habits picked up over the years that make a person sound less than professional.

Damir’s is all about experiences. Traveling (roaming) around Croatia, Slovenia, Portugal, Bali, Brazil, Australia to name just a few places, Damir decided his best course of action would be to get into marketing. Since there was no real “get rich quick” scheme that would allow him to be lazy the rest of his life, his passion for psychology led him to marketing.

Tea has a Masters of Law degree and had been practicing law for over 10 years. • Work from your happy place. If you are stressed, get grounded and centered.
• Use bullet points. Just making a simple list, then going back later to fill in the details (or fill in as you go) can lay out an easy-to-follow plan.
• Work from the end result, back.
• Celebrate small victories as well as big ones.

When you simplify things, you can get more done in less time and more efficiently. So if you find yourself getting overwhelmed, stop, do one of the above or anything else that helps you see the big picture, and remove unneeded steps.

Gila and Jon are married and have been together 27 years. They have a 19 year old daughter, Abby, and 2 fur-babies, a Japanese Chin named Henry (10) and a Labrador Retriever named BOLO (3). Jon was selected to attend the United States Naval Academy and went on to serve for just over 27 years. At the academy, Jon played baseball…but didn’t get called up by his team, The Angels of Anaheim. Still, he cheers them on every chance he gets and loves attending games. He stays in shape with intense fitness workouts and long distance biking.

How did they meet? Gila bought Jon with her Visa card while bidding on bachelors at an auction in 1988. True story.

With a military lifestyle and moving every 2 years, Gila always had a sales gig going on. She convinced Jon to adopt a Dalmatian pup and realized she really loved dogs and became a dog trainer. Not just any dog trainer, Gila immersed herself in the science of canine behavior and wherever they moved, Gila’s reputation as the “go to” dog trainer proceeded them…much to the disappointment of Abby, the third human Kurtz in the family.

Jon became involved in Dog is Good and upon retiring from the Navy, jumped in with both feet. He has even sworn off his triathlete training to devote time to building Dog is Good.

What do you do when you’re on vacation and meet an interesting couple that is together 24/7, but doesn’t quite fit the usual requirement of owning a business together? You interview them anyway for the Thursday after vacation show.

Johan and Paloma work for Norwegian Cruise Line and they are the Cruise Next team on board the beautiful NCL Star. We met them at the Latitudes welcome party and we thought, wow, 24/7 and no place to hide. This should be good.

Paloma is from Mexico City, Mexico and Johan is from France. They met on an NCL cruise they worked together when Paloma was still on the Cruise Next team and Johan was in food and beverage. They dated, fell in love, had to work together to stay on the same ship and got married.

Although they are not the founders of NCL or even the Cruise Next program, they are beyond 24/7. When you work with your sweetheart and are sweethearts with your working partner, as these two are, that’s one kind of together all the time.

But when you live on a ship, you can’t just jump in the car and have a guys’ night out, and you communicate in a third language (Johan speaks French, Paloma speak Spanish, so they communication in English) it can put added stress on any relationship.

This is 24/7 like you can’t imagine and they are making it work well.

Regina and Rendel are newlyweds with a little experience. Regina became a widow after 44 years of marriage. Rendel was married twice before, one ending in divorce and the second in the passing of his wife.

A little older and a lot wiser, Rendel and Regina met, married, and went into business together. The adventure started a short 4 months ago. Rendel enjoys motorcycling, photography and is an artist and great cook. Regina likes to sew, craft, crochet and make jewelry.

Between them there are 8 children and numerous grandchildren.

Regina opened up a bed and breakfast with her late husband in 2011. She was coming off the 2-year sabbatical she took from business when her 13 year old, multi-state, multi-million dollar staffing company failed after the crash of 2008.

In 2014 Regina began studying to become a business and life coach. She called on her own experiences for her coaching and books.

Rendel became a chiropractor in 1994, was a co-owner of Diamond Spine Fitness and became a business partner and husband to Regina. Rendel has taken over all the maintenance and operations for the bed and breakfast. He is also the camera and video guy and works with Regina on the marriage retreats.

Elise is a California beach girl and Scott is an outdoor enthusiast perfectly content to be in the mountains. Hmmm. But marriage is most important to them, so they repeat their honeymoon at least once a year, and they do date night.

Elise has the strong branding background. She freelanced for 5 branding and design companies at the ripe old age of 17, worked for Sony pictures, then ventured out on her own.

Soral is a pharmacist by trade by realized early on he has an entrepreneur’s heart. He enjoys learning about all the different ways people have become successful in business.
Samantha and Soral don’t really consider themselves artists nor do they really drink. But they enjoy helping others realize that everyone is talented and, through painting, sipping and having fun, they can achieve more than they ever thought.

Chris is a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan, despite the century since a World Series win. He has transferred his love of baseball to Nancy and their 2 boys. Chris also enjoys fly fishing and hopes to take the family fly-fishing in the Amazon someday.

A joint album started on memory web by Nancy and her friends is all about raising boys including the pictures of boys dancing around with underwear on their heads. Chris and Nancy look forward 20 years using those pictures to embarrass their sons.

Memory Web is an online archiving system for digitizing photos and documenting information about the pictures. It is the first service of its kind, allowing people to not only archive photos and add information, but also allows you to own the information you add to your pictures and albums.

Chris is crazy organized and his love of curating family history and photos is integral to Memory Web. He is a founder, advisor and a keen photographer.

Nancy is the ideas person and also co-founder of Memory. She does the writing, marketing and communications. Chris figured out early in the relationship to defer to the English major.

Their 2 boys, ages 10 and 12 are very interested in the business. They both ask great questions and have a great curiosity about Memory Web.

John and Heather are originally from Wisconsin, moved to Arizona and then decided to retire in Ecuador. But they didn’t quite retire. They are together for 26 years and are married. Between the two, there are 4 children, 2 from each spouse.

John is a big sports and music fan who grew up in Seymour, WI. Heather grew up in Waupaca, WI. She loves warm weather so she can be outside as much as possible. John and Heather met in Wisconsin and her love for warmer weather, along with a business opportunity, brought them to Phoenix, AZ. But with way too cold winters in Wisconsin and way too hot summers in Arizona, John and Heather landed in their happy weather place, Punta Carnero, Ecuador.

When John and Heather moved to Arizona, they created a trucking company together. So the Bed and Breakfast is not their first “Together 24/7” adventure. John and Heather ran the trucking company for 9 years and decided to sell it and move to Ecuador.

When they found their perfect home right on the water, John and Heather decided to embark on another business adventure. They fixed up the house and opened up Las Palmas Del Mar, a Bed and Breakfast.

It’s almost as if Libby and Andy were meant to meet and get married. Both Libby and Andy moved around a lot while growing up. Andy lived in Texas, Georgia, Arizona, Utah and Oklahoma growing up. Libby lived in Georgia and went to college and law school at the University of Kansas. Libby and Andy met when they were 28 and both living in Oklahoma. But in high school, both Libby and Andy lived in Georgia, went to competing high schools, and both hung out at the same mall. Andy shopped there and Libby worked there.

Libby and Andy have 3 children, 2 boys and a girl, the youngest. Their daughter is off to college, one son is back home again and the oldest is out of the house for good. They think.

Both enjoy RV camping, reading and riding their quad in the cooler-than-Phoenix White Mountains. Andy still gets together with his fraternity brothers a few times a year for golf and possible mayhem.

Libby has wanted to be an attorney since she was 11 and she still carries that passion with her. Libby is a member of the Oklahoma, Kansas and Arizona bars as well as the Tenth Circuit, Fifth Circuit and US Supreme Court.

Andy’s career has been in sales and marketing. He holds a marketing degree from ASU and an MBA from Oklahoma City University.

Two years ago, when Libby decided to focus her practice solely on estate planning, Libby and Andy decided it would be great to work together. Andy helped rebrand the firm and handles the marketing and all things promotional for the Law Firm. He also works with Libby in the capacity of paralegal.

They made the decision at the outset that if working together threatened their wonderful marriage of 29 years in any way, they would stop. So far, its been great.

Say what “hat” your wearing. Are you speaking to each other with your “spouse hat” on or your “business hat” on? It is so important not to jump between the two.

Both Cristina and Drew are lovers of all things outdoors and adventurous. Which is great since that is what their business is all about.

Cristina loves working with children and animals and was a teacher for a number of years. She also enjoys photography and traveling to new, fun places.

Drew grew up with entrepreneurial parents and has been surrounded by couples in business and in love. His dad was his sports inspiration and his mom was his outdoors inspiration. His parents also instilled a deep faith in him as well as the importance of living a balanced life.

When Drew met Cristina and figured out she might be the one, finding out she enjoyed travel and the outdoors sealed the deal. They hope to start a family in the future (although they won’t say how long we have to wait!) Right now, they enjoy building their business, traveling and fixing up the new house they bought and making it into a home.

Drew started out working with Jackson Kayak. He is a part owner and designer of fishing kayaks. From there he created the TV show “Hooked on Wild Waters” and started a kayak fishing tournament trail company called “River Bassin Tournament Trail.” Both companies fall under the umbrella of Deep Creek Ventures.

When Drew and Cristina met and started talking about marriage, Drew asked Cristina if she could see herself quitting her teaching position to travel and work with Drew to be part of Deep Creek Ventures. Cristina said YES to both and a third YES to the marriage proposal.

Too often in life we come up with the most brilliant ideas, but we never see them to fruition. Because we don’t have a plan to get us there. No blueprint to guide us to how to build our dream.

Having a plan is paramount to actually achieving your goals. On the show, the truth about our lives with and without a plan. Hint – plans totally rock.

Want to take the challenge? Create a simple plan, a list if you will and see what happens. Draw a line down the page. At the top, write your goal, dream, desire. Then on the left write down 20 things you can do to get you to your goal. No time lines or elaborate plans or details. Just 20 things you can do (Google something, make a call, take a class).

On the right side of the paper, write 20 things you need to have “happen.” Not things you can do or influence. Just things it would be nice to have happen. Like “get invited to a party where this person I want to meet will be.” Don’t harp on the right side or try to force the situation. Just do the things you wrote down that you can do.

Mrunal and Amar are a fun-loving couple who enjoy adventures and meeting new people. Mrunal loves to travel and meet new people. She believes the greatest experiences in life come from meeting new people. She also enjoys expressing herself on canvas and painting nature.

Mrunal has an extensive background in insurance. She has developed new markets, been a key account manager and was a consultant for the Ministry of Health of the Indian government. This is her second entrepreneurial venture.

Amar spent 13 years in construction including 9 years living and working in the US. Under the name Amar Vyas is the pen name of Amar Deshpande, He wrote the book NRI – Now Returned to India. Mrunal created Shree Gaja Consultants, a publishing firm to produce and promote Amar’s book.

Amar and Mrunal co-founded Kamakshi Media early in 2016 to expand into podcasting as well as add more books and content offerings. The My Kitaab podcast interviews authors, editors and publishers who share their insights on publishing books in India – a country with over 20 official languages.

Robert and Shawn recently became engaged when Shawn took advantage of Sadie Hawkins Day and asked Robert to marry her. Robert and Shawn have been together a little over a year and have 4 children between them.

Shawn is a third generation Las Vegas native who relocated to Phoenix, AZ back in 2005. She is an outdoor person and lives life through an open mind, trying new things and viewing obstacles as opportunities.

Robert was born in Kansas, raised in Texas, moved to Southern California before settling in Arizona. His background is incredibly varied – from the USMC to a Chanel Boutique manager and into the world of tech, real estate and the nutraceutical/pharmaceutical field. He was even a juggler at the Renaissance Festival.

An idea started in 2009, Robert waited out contractual obligations and finding the right partner (Shawn) to launch United Health Association in January of 2016.

United Health Association is an association for practitioners of complementary and alternative health care. Originally conceived to be a directory, the idea grew to become a national association and the first of its kind. UHA is designed to give a national voice to alternative health care while providing the public with education and an understanding of the many modalities other than traditional western medicine for healing.

Mark and Mina could not have had more different backgrounds growing. They say opposites attract and these two started differently and ended up on the same page building a great business together.

Mina was the daughter of a long haul, hippie truck driver, her mom. They lived someplace different every year for the first 9 years of her life. Tragedy struck and Mina lost her mother in an accident. It was these experiences that would lead her to help others create the safe space she would create for herself and start Synergy Design & Construction. Mina likes yoga and meditation, feng shui (great for changing a home’s energy) and writing poetry.

Mark grew up on a golf course in Pennsylvania. Mark had a golf club in his hand as soon as he could walk. Maybe even before that. His dad was a golf pro and his mother was also in the golf business. Mark loves the outdoors, a good glass of wine and also volunteers as a coach for their local Special Olympic athletes

Together, Mark and Mina enjoy playing golf, watching movies and traveling.

In 2008, after the economic downturn, and just 3 months after getting married and moving Mina’s 91-year-old grandmother in with them, Mina decided to start Synergy Design & Construction. And she convinced Mark to come on board for the ride.

Mina has been in real estate and the design field since 1994. She is passionate about helping people create a space that nurtures and empowers clients through a methodical and holistic approach to design.

Mark has a strong background in structure and process development. He has managed the operations of six multi-million dollar facilities for two Fortune 500 Companies. Al and Michelle met on a last minute blind date in Detroit. After relocating to Arizona with her family, Michelle and Al stayed in touch and were soon engaged. Al has a military background and served on the Tempe police force for 22 years. Michelle was an LPN (nurse). After their daughter Dawn was born, Michelle started Special Moments in 1984 as a cake designer and grew the business from there.

Michelle started the company in 1984 and Al helped out from the beginning. In 1996 Al took over the management portion as the CEO. Dawn and Brad, their children, started working in the family business and worked their way up to VP positions.

Jeff and Camille have been together 17 years, are married and have a teenage son, Aidan, conceived through astrology. Jeff and Camille met when Jeff was studying Aryvedic astrology and doing some experiments in regards to astrology and relationships. When driving down the Pacific Coast Highway, he stopped in a gas station and next to him was Camille filling up her car. They struck up a conversation about crop circles. Jeff is a second generation astrologer. He has a long history of entrepreneurship and in the entertainment industry. He started with a recording studio and did a lot of programming, filming and audio/video.

Camille is originally from Louisiana and started acting at 21. She’s had many jobs including caterer, faux finisher, zoo keeper and substitute teacher.

Jeff became a full-time astrology in 2000. In 2010, Camille began helping Jeff in the astrology business. After booking some very visible shows for Jeff including Coast to Coast with George Noory, Camille immediately became Jeff’s office manager, editor, gatekeeper and office manager.

Storymix is all about telling a story, your story, through user-generated content. Storymix started as “Reeltime DVD,a home video editing company. After a launch party where hundreds of friends and family said what a great idea this was and they would be customers, Ariane received 2 orders for video editing.

Mike was studying lean start-up business practices and came into Reeltime DVD to help the company pivot and become Storymix Media. Before going forward, Mike and Ariane decided to look at what market would be best by studying potential clients. They put together what Mikes calls the ugliest wedding website ever and created an MVP – Minimum Viable Product study to find their direction.

From this discovery process the main idea that became Storymix Media was created.

Dee and Angie married in 1987. They were high school sweethearts and after all these years they remain in love and in a thriving and delicious business together. Custard Stand Food Products and The Custard Stand restaurants have been around for 25 years. Started from an old family recipe, Dee and Angie went from one custard stand to a restaurant, food products and franchises.

Growing up, Dee and Angie loved to go to a walk-up dairy bar in our hometown that served the best hot dogs and ice cream ever. In 1991, they decided to open The Custard Stand, a walk-up dairy bar, and bring back those items and more. Over the years, many customers wanted to buy their hot dog chili so they took it to the retail market.

Recently, Dee and Angie appeared on Shark Tank, and while they did not get a deal, their business received the “Shark Tank bump” and had some great exposure.

Dee and Angie were kind enough to send us some of their hotdog chili and chili soup. We ate some as soon as we received it and WOW – it is delicious.

Calculate your risk and take the right risk for your business. When someone says “NO,” ask why. Be persistent and find out what the no was about. That will help you improve and grow.

Michelle and Adam both grew up in California, but not near each other. Michelle grew up in South Lake Tahoe while Adam grew up in the Cowboy Capital of the World, Oakdale.

Michelle is creative and loves a great cup of coffee and bargain shopping. Adam is all about the outdoors. He loves camping, fishing, dirt biking and anything outside. Both are very involved in their church.

They started working together when they first starting dating, continued the relationship and business and eventually got married. John and Jeanette hail from California. John’s love for cooking came at an early age. In an Italian and Jewish household, food was most important. Jeanette met John as a result of a setup by her aunt, Nancy.

It was not love at first sight according to Jeanette. In fact, the exact opposite was true. Another date or two later and Jeanette was convinced.

Chef John started his catering business part-time in California, where he met Jeanette. After a few months, they fell in love, got engaged and moved to Arizona so they could devote more time to building their business.

It wasn’t long before Jeanette started helping Chef John with their catering company and about 16 years ago they decided to become full-time caterers.

Chef John and Jeanette are award winning and Chef John is a James Beard Nominated Chef. Together, they create culinary masterpieces for 2 to 2000 people at any budget. Their passion is working with people to create memorable events and celebrations.

Burnout can happen for any number of reasons. Industries change and grow. People change and grow. New technologies can cause havoc or make your business so simple, you need something more to do. Whatever the reason, honor the fact that you are burnt out.

Take stock of your company. Can it be sold or transferred? Can it or should it be closed down slowly? Who will take care of your customers? Unless you just won the billion-dollar lottery, you’ll need to start another business or take a position in a company. The strongest way to do that is to make your exit clean, strong and without burning bridges.

Creating a new business can be an evolutionary move for you or it can be just another “thing” you try and decide against. Don’t be a flake. Stick with what you chose to do long enough to gain a great reputation, become a leader and then you can move on.

So yes, you can burnout. But unlike the job your parents or grandparents took way back when that they had to stick with until retirement, if you play it right, you can change and grow.

Brandon and Shelley are wonderful examples that we can have “do-over’s” in life and that you can find joy in everything.

Brandon is the previous entrepreneur. He has created and sold several businesses, some wildly successful, some not as much. Brandon has a certification from the State of Florida in Criminal Justice and recently completed his training as a Certified Life Coach. All of his other training comes from mentors and experience.

And while we don’t have the routine completely perfect, our time freedom allows us to go to Costco during the day where there are plenty of samples and fewer crowds, to taking vacations, to simply enjoy an extended lunch together.

John and Connie have been married for 34 years and have seven children, ranging in age from 15 to 32. Connie homeschooled all the kids while John worked in the service industry as a pool builder, then later in concrete, electrical and plumbing.

John and Connie and the kids still at home live on an acre property where they raise some animals and enjoy farm life.

Four of the seven children work in the family business. Three are handymen and one works in the office with Connie.

A little about their business.

After a number of years working as a pool builder, mobile home park manager (where he became licensed in electrical, plumbing and concrete to add 100 spaces to the park, landscape contractor and the part-time in a hardware store when the economy took a down-turn, John started Use My Guy Services at the suggestion and with the support of his wife.

They created the business part-time 5 years ago while John was still at the hardware store. Being consistent and giving great service has led to a referral business and repeat customers. Three of the boys are learning the trades and working with John. Connie and her daughter work in the office and do all the networking.

Steven and Paul met 19 years ago in the wild and wacky world of New York City ad agencies.

Paul was born in Pisa, Italy and moved to Boston, MA when he was just 7 years old. Paul joined an order of monks when he was 18 and studied with them at Iona College before going to New York to work in advertising and study at the School of Visual Arts. He continued in the advertising world, including starting his own agency. Paul was married and has 3 children. One of whom works with Paul and Steven at Villa Cappelli.

Steven was born in a small town in Texas. He moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas with degrees in both English and Advertising. After graduation, Steven moved to New York to become a copywriter and worked at several of the larger agencies in town. Steven moved from the advertising world to the magazine world.

A little about their business.

Paul’s mother is from Terlizzi, Bari, Italy and he grew up surrounded by family from Terlizzi. Around 2008, as the financial world collapsed, they began to think about doing something different. Paul and Steven bought an old villa and spent several years and lots of money fixing up this beautiful, 20,000 square foot villa.

From the beginning, Paul saw Villa Cappelli as more than a house or home, he saw it as a brand. Over the last 10 years, they built the food exporting from olive oil to a line of gourmet foods and the vacation rental property of Villa Cappelli.

Villa Cappelli is an agriturismo (agriculture/tourism) property that highlights the beauty of Italy and the locally made foods and wines of the Bari region.

Kenny & Brenna are together more than 20 years, married and have 3 children, 13, 11 and 8. All three children help out at the Farmer’s Markets and even have their own customers. They are self-described foodies and love cooking and enjoying meals together.

Kenny started commercial fishing in Alaska in 1996 and an early date with Brenna was spent working and living together on a commercial fishing boat. Surviving was the sign of true love. Kenny has been an entrepreneur since high school.

Brenna has a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and an MBA in Global Management. She is the accounting and finance person of the team.

In addition to working together and being together 24/7, Kenneth and Brenna also homeschool their children.

A little about their business.

The term “Fish Hugger” and the name of the company came as a play on words (Tree Hugger) to explain to a customer how wild caught fishing was far more sustainable and better for the environment and the humans that consume the fish than farm-raised salmon would be.

Fish Hugger is a niche food company. In addition to the fish that Kenny catches each Summer in Alaska, they source beef from New Mexico where Brenna and the kids spend their Summer, and they carry locally (to Phoenix) sourced honey. Kenny also teaches smoking classes to turn salmon into smoked salmon and lox.

Always support your partner and regularly reevaluate your common goals. Be sure to stay in line with them or change up as needed to move forward.

David and Tina live the mobile lifestyle. With their son and daughter, they call Florida, New York and Costa Rica home.

Tina grew up in an entrepreneurial family. Her parents owned a retail store and they lived upstairs. She started answering phones at 4 and going to trade shows at 6 (who can resist a cute kid?)

David starting learning about being an entrepreneur through Tina. David comes from a more traditional corporate background in the technology sector. He loves being a dad and is passionate about the environment and sustainability.

StartSomething Creative Business Solutions is a podcast, consulting, training, and consulting for new business owners. Tina started in private practice as a coach. Along with David, they grew StartSomething to leverage Tina’s coaching wisdom to reach more people. Until recently, David has been the “roadie” to Tina’s “singer.” He is the analytical, step by step guy, keeping Tina in line and on track. Tina likes shiny balls juggling in the air as her many projects swirl around.

Let’s start with the introduction of pullets (adolescent female chickens) to the hens in the coop. Somehow, we’ve managed to connect that to networking.

We get to the basic of networking to help you increase your sphere of influence, business relationships and your customers. Who should network and where do you network? Networking is a skill that needs to be practiced. You don’t want to be a wall-flower, but you don’t want to be an aggressive, annoying pain either. There is a balance, protocol, and of course, etiquette. We talk about building relationships and power partners, not doing a sales pitch to every person you meet. There’s business cards and follow up and connection and the all-important rolodex.

If you have never networked or have had minimal success, this will get you back on track.

Linda and Julia originally met in a theater group in Phoenix. Both enjoy singing and acting and they love playing with their fur-baby, a 13 year old dog named Abby.

Julia has been in real estate for 11 years. During some of that same time, Linda was a teacher in Phoenix Title 1 schools. Julia would help in the library at Linda’s school and Linda would return the favor by helping in the real estate office to the extent she could.

When Linda decided to get out of teaching, she worked with Julia to get her real estate license and went to work at another real estate office. Several years later, Julia became a Real Estate Broker and Linda came on board as a Broker in her office.

Kitty Litter Cake (from http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Kitty-Litter-Cake)

Ingredients

1 package spice cake or German chocolate cake mix
1 package white cake mix
1 large package vanilla instant pudding mix
1 package vanilla sandwich cookies
Green food coloring
Small Tootsie Rolls

Prepare and bake the cake mixes. Follow the directions on the boxes, but don't worry too much about pan sizes: we're not going to frost it the normal way! Allow the cakes to cool to room temperature.

Prepare the pudding mix. While the cakes are baking, make the pudding, and let chill in the refrigerator.

Crumble the white sandwich cookies in small batches. You can use a food processor (scrape often to get every little piece), kitchen mallet, or just crumble them by hand. Set aside all but about 1/4 cup.

Add a few drops of green food coloring to 1/4 cup of cookie crumbs. You can either mix them together with a fork or shake them together in a closed container such as a jar or Tupperware. Set aside for now.

Crumble the room-temperature cakes into a large bowl. Toss gently with half of the remaining white cookie crumbs and enough chilled pudding to moisten (not soak) the crumbs.

Make the litter. Add the cake, cookie crumbs, and pudding mixture into a brand new, clean litter box. If you don’t have one, find a large rectangular Tupperware container to act as a stand-in (or sit-in).

Temper your Tootsies. Heat three unwrapped Tootsie rolls in a microwave-safe dish until they're soft and pliable. Pinch off the ends so they are no longer blunt and look convincingly like what cats put in the litter box. Repeat this process with as many Tootsie rolls as you'd like to add, microwaving them in batches of three. Reserve three for the final garnish.

Half-bury the shaped Tootsie rolls in mixture. Sprinkle them with (normal-colored) cookie crumbs to make it look like litter has been kicked onto them.

Scatter the green cookie crumbs lightly over the top. This will mimic real litter, where many of the grains are often blue or green.

Heat and shape the last three Tootsie rolls. Scrape them on top of the cake. One can hang over the side of the litter box. Sprinkle them lightly with cookie crumbs to make them look more recent.

Eat it up, yum! Place the box on a newspaper and sprinkle a few of the cookie crumbs around. Serve with a brand new, washed litter scooper for that extra touch!

Serve it with a cow patty for extra yumminess. Take a scoop of chocolate ice cream and flatten it out on the plate. For extra realism, thoroughly mix crumbled shredded wheat with softened ice cream, shape into cow patties, and re-freeze.

Do one thing for 4 to 6 weeks. Then add the next new habit in for 4 to 6 weeks and so on. Trying to change your life all at once doesn’t help you keep consistent.

Tom and Ariana met in college in 2002. They married in 2008 after Ariana finished up her degree in Zoology (what everyone studies to become an entrepreneur) and have 2 children, Elena and Ty.

Look to your partner to figure out what they are bringing to the table. Know what you bring to the business as well. If your partner doesn’t bring what the business needs, going into business together may not be right for you.

Larry and Isabel have been married since 1959. They have 4 children, Mitchie, Barry (yup, our very own), Scott and Helene. They also have numerous grandchildren (Together 24/7 note – while they are our nieces and nephews, honestly, we lost count). There are no great-grandchildren as yet. Eldest and married grandson, Evan, is constantly reminded of this fact.

Larry and Isabel are world travelers who meet someone they know on every trip and make friends wherever they go.
Larry is a former Navy Sailor having served on the USS Alstede. Both Larry and Isabel work on the semi-annual
Alstede Reunion open to anyone who served on the ship and their spouses.

A little about their business.

Larry started as an accountant out of Pace University where he achieved Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and went on to get his CPA While working for the accounting firm that had the Woodstock Aquarian Exposition as one of its clients, he also started to develop his own accounting practice. Over the years he grew his client base, became an accounting professor and brought Isabel on to assist him in the administrative aspect of his practice.

They have worked together since 1980 and are still in love and working together.

Heather realized that photography was her passion while in college pursuing her BA in Communications. She started hcophotos in 2010 after she shot her first wedding. Heather has a passion for art and does most of the hands-on work and editing. Jay is an entrepreneur who has run his own business in the past. After moving from Seattle to Pensacola, Heather realized she needed a second shooter and Jay is a natural. In addition, Jay is a CPA and handles the business and accounting aspect of hcophotos.

Jay is also working on a podcast called Overcome and Run about obstacle course racing. Heather has become part of the podcast by joining Jay in the Ultimate Mudder Race (24 hours). They will be using the experience as part of the show. Jay plans to launch January 2016.

Be patient with your partner. You are both bringing different skills to the table and you need to learn how each other operates. As you learn how the other works, be patient.

Amy has a BSN and Master’s degrees in nursing. She is mom to 2 girls, ages 22 and 27. Joe is a retired medical doctor, member of Mensa and a collector of old medical text books.

Both are master gardeners, growing herbs, vegetables and they have fruit trees. They also raise backyard tilapia. Yum. Amy began working for Joe and a romance blossomed. They have been working together for 20 years, married for 18 years and started their most recent business together in in 2010.

After Hurricane Katrina and the flu pandemic in 2009, Joe and Amy realized there was a lack of medical preparedness training. Medical doctors could easily become overwhelmed by the number of sick and injured. And if you couldn’t get to a doctor, how could you help yourself or your family?
They have written four books and are working on number 5 teaching medical preparedness. Amy creates very unique medical kits she designs and packs. They have a weekly podcast, semi-monthly live videocast, a You tube Channel and a very active Facebook group.

Alan is new to entrepreneurship. He was the District Executive for the Boy Scouts of America and worked in a family business on Long Island before moving to Arizona. As a certified computer tech, he has worked in the field for the last 12 years.

Alan has been working with Lori as the CTO of All About Breastfeeding. Lori teaches classes and works with the new parents while Alan handles the website and all online aspects including social media. Recently,
Lori launched her podcast with Alan as Producer and Technical Advisor.

Kirk and Kathy have been married for 35 years. They have lived around the country and before moving to the Phoenix area, they lived in Colorado. On a vacation to Phoenix, Kirk looked around and said “We’re moving.” Just a few months later, they moved.

After working for an HVAC company and having a few clients on the side, Kirk decided to venture out on his own. In 1982 he started his heating and cooling company in Colorado. In 1985, Kathy decided she wanted to stay home with her children, so she informed Kirk she was taking over operations and bringing the kids to work.

Geoff started Viking Postcards in 2011 and started the business part-time and worked his full-time job until he grew the company enough to go full-time. Michelle came into the business with Geoff and is the face and networker for Viking Premium Postcards.

In the process of doing due diligence for a friend buying a printer, Geoff learned about being a printer. Michelle was working for an existing direct mail company that was failing. Geoff created a turn-around plan for the business and when they didn’t use the plan, Geoff and Michelle took the plan, changed it to become a startup and began their business.

Communication is key. Focus on the issue, not the person. Segregate your personal life from your business life and don’t carry the argument past the office.

Omar and Nicole are currently engaged with a wedding planned in January, 2016. Omar started out at the Wharton Business School but soon became frustrated with it and left. He is an educator who has spent in 11 years of education as a teacher, teacher-trainer, and manager.

Focus on and improve your communication skills. A great way to do this is by writing a blog. Blogging allows you to refine your communication skills. Always keep growing. Look for progress in everything you do. Be aware of how you develop and how you are growing.

Scott and Katie have been married for 10 years and have 2 year old twins. They met on the Ultimate Frisbee Field in Atlanta, Georgia. Scott has a background in IT and enjoys starting new companies. Katie and Scott first created Green Building Education Services together and ran the company for several years before selling it and going on to create The National Registry for Adoption together.

Scott is the famed creator of Scoop No More – A Cat Toilet Training Video. Sadly, there was no Oscar nomination. Scott spends his free time playing guitar and wakeboarding. As mom to 2 year old twins, Katie is now the Duchess of Dishwashing, Master of the Meal plan and Prime Minister of Potty Training.

The National Registry for Adoption is an adoption service that matches those with excess embryos from IVF with families dealing with infertility issues. Katie runs day-to-day operations while Scott maintains the website, works with Katie and has a separate business teaching people about personal finance.

Schedule your day to separate your business from your personal life. Business isn’t worth your marriage and family. Always have a back-up plan and 6 to 9 months’ worth of expenses in the bank.

Mike and Eddie have been together for 17 years and are married. No kids in the house, but some very adorable dogs. They decided to go into business together 4 years ago. Mike had an epiphany, with a help of a friend, at his 50th birthday party.

AZ POPS is an artisan popsicle company started 4 years ago in Phoenix. Pam & Butch currently have one store front, have space at several local farmer’s markets and are in the process of building out a second location in Phoenix. Work comes home all the time and home comes to work every day. Their children have been involved in the business since the beginning.

Having the business gave Pam the flexibility she wanted to spend time raising the children.

Susie and Otto are proving the second time is the charm in marriage. Susie scored herself a young stud! They have been together since 1997 and started their business in 1999. Between them they have a son, a daughter and 2 grandchildren. 

In the past Otto sold advertising, and Susie was a librarian at Ohio State University. Otto started two of his own companies before creating the business he and Susie created.

They live what they teach and take time every day to keep the sparks of love glowing in their relationship. 

A little about their business.

Susie and Otto’s mission is to help people bring more intimacy to their relationships, open up clear lines of communication and become closer as a couple. They started their business because they were new in their relationship and people around them began to notice how close and loving their relationship was (and is). Others around them wanted to know their secret and so Susie and Otto began giving talks. Then they created a website, an email newsletter, created programs and wrote books about how they created the loving relationship they have and how others can, too.

Open your heart and listen to the other person. Honor each other’s strengths. Talk it all out and don’t make assumptions.

Don’t ever buy into any of the mythology of how hard it is to work together or what you are and are not supposed to do. The person with the least fear leads. And that can change moment to moment when working together.

They have been together 26 years and married for 23. Jon has his Masters in Urban Planning, was a past East Valley Mayor. Cheryl is a mother and an entrepreneur. She has owned a child care business, an art gallery and has worked with Jon since the beginning of their relationship.

John is the Real Estate Broker and Cheryl is a Real Estate Agent in the office. They Jon & Cheryl won the Century 21 Centurion Award in 2005 as a team of just 2 against other, much larger teams.  Valley of the Sun is an independent, boutique brokerage in Chandler, AZ. They work with buyers, sellers and investors.

Your ability to handle stress and anxiety will determine your success. Figure out how much tension, anxiety and stress limit and live below that level.

Dave & Noelle have been together for 8 years. Dave is originally from Maui, Hawaii and moved to Phoenix in 2002. Dave enjoys surfing (a requirement for those born in Hawaii), snowboarding, traveling and playing the drums. Noelle grew up in Arizona. Noelle studied business at Arizona Christian University. She has been in the corporate world (didn’t enjoy it) the field of higher education administration (didn’t enjoy it) and now works with her husband (loves it!) She is glad to be using her business degree again.

Noelle and Dave enjoy working out together. They have participated in several races.

Clark Heating & Cooling is an HVAC, the AC part being most important in Phoenix. Dave started the business 5 years ago and they were married at the time. Noelle came into the business full-time 2 years ago as the office person and networking person.  

Dave came out to AZ to study HVAC. He liked it so much he stayed and after a few years working for someone else, started his own company. Noelle is the organization of the company. She handles the office and all new business development.

John & Andrea have been together for 12 years. They have 2 children, ages 2 and 5. Both children love to do small things in the restaurant and interact with the customers. John was born in Spain and was a military kid, so he travelled a lot. He has a degree in International Business and a Master’s in Business Management.

Andrea was born in the Netherlands and raised in Flagstaff, AZ. Her degree is in International Hotel Restaurant Management. She worked at the prestigious Four Seasons Resort in the Finance Management department. 

They first came up with the idea of opening a restaurant when traveling the world and they were sitting at a pizza shop in Australia.

John comes from a restaurant family. The original thought was for a pizzeria. But instead they opened a New Mexican Restaurant. Neither was an entrepreneur before opening the restaurant. La Ristra has been in business for 2 ½ years.

They share the duties to maintain a work/life balance. They aren’t together 24/7 so that someone is always with the children.

Andrea: Let your kids come into the business. It helps them better understand why mommy and daddy are always working. And it gives them a sense of pride.

Alex & Laura have been together for 6 years and started in business together right away. Alex fell madly in love when he saw how well Laura could prep a window.

At age 8 Alex started a paper route, so he started being an entrepreneur very young. Alex served in the Air Force and was a survival instructor. He and Laura hope to create another business teaching survival training classes like those you see on Bear Grylls. 

Laura met Alex in 2009 on a blind date. She started working with him soon after. She became more involved with the business. She has a Bachelor’s in Organizational Management. Before meeting Alex, Laura had several businesses in construction clean-up, house-cleaning and elder care.

They have a son, Gunner, age 13. He is already being trained in the business. 

A little about their business.

Both Laura and Alex work on the installation of the window films. Laura also takes care of the back-office including all finances while Alex does all the bidding, estimates and sales. Laura is dipping her toe into the sales arena.

They are also creating a civilian survival school based on shows like Naked and Afraid and Bear Gryllis. Look for a future announcement, especially if you enjoy hiking, back-country skiing, or camping.

Laura: Choose wisely. If you are not a good mate in marriage. If you are not good mates, you won’t make good business partners.

Alex: Eat, sleep, and breath your business. If you don’t live your business, you won’t be successful. You must be 100% committed to the business.

Sara and Rob have been together for 4 years and are currently “shacking up.” They have been in business together for 2 years in New Jersey. Sara is a marketing coach / guru and enjoys coaching and helping women. Rob is also a Police Officer in New Jersey. They have 2 boys ages 8 and 11 that help up with some heavy lifting in the business.

Tailgates 2 Go is a trailer rental company that rents trailers for tailgate parties. It comes equipped with everything you need to throw an awesome tailgate party, including a clean bathroom! You can even have all the food prepped for you and you can watch all the pre-game festivities while grilling and eating.

Sara is also a business coach and marketing guru and she continues to have marketing and coaching clients. Rob’s first venture in entrepreneurship was as a personal trainer working out pf Bally’s.

Be sure to put systems into place so that things can run more smoothly. When an issue happens, when something goes wrong, review it and put into place whatever checks and balances or other systems are needed so it doesn’t happen again.

Jim & Maura have been together 38 years and married 34 years. They started these businesses together (and each is a part of the other’s business) about 5 years ago. This is the third time Jim and Maura worked together. They worked together at the same company out of college and later built a very successful manufacturers rep firm in the computer industry.

This time around they chose lifestyle businesses that combine their personal interests and global travel as they enjoy Life Re-Imagined.

They have a daughter and Maura home-schooled her while staying busy with their business.

Jim created MIKE the Microphone, the first universal animated brand in sports. MIKE, or Mr. Rophone, has penned numerous downloadable comic books, blogs and recently launched the MIKE on Sports podcast. Jim also serves as back office operations for Maura’s website and podcast and he does the scheduling and facilitating for her international speaking appearances.

Maura inspires people to be “Living Happy – Inside Out.” She is a 21st century cultural journalist who is passionate about people and what is best in all of us. She is an international speaker, podcaster, Huffington Post contributor and frequent radio guest. Her favorite is to speak about how you can live your happiest life from the inside, out. She is the Ambassador of Happiness.

Maura also serves as the publisher of Jim’s MIKE Sports Comic Book series.

They are both dentists, Aaron is a general dentist and Susan is an orthodontist. They met when attending Farleigh Dickinson University in 1985, married since 1990. They have 3 children, all are in college. Matthew is going to dental school and will be working with Dr. Mom and Dr. Dad in the future.  They always made sure that whenever there was something to do with the kids, one of them was always with the kids. They always had each other’s back. They truly enjoy treating children and working with each other. IF he wasn’t a dentist, Aaron would have been an architect.

Susan decided to go into orthodontics and after working in a general practice, decided to become a pediatric dentist and become Susan’s best resource. After their residencies, they decided to start a practice in Randolph, NJ so they could share the responsibilities of the office and the home and kids. Aaron takes care of business and bills, Susan takes care of the office staff and day-to-day operations. Recently, they sold their practice but continue to practice dentistry without having to do day-to-day operations.

If you work for someone, gain from those around you what they are good at and what their weaknesses are.  That will be a tremendous asset when you move into your own business.

You must 100% trust each other in all aspects of business and life. Have the same philosophical approach and values as your spouse.

So first of all, be kind. This is our first attempt at Show Notes and our first attempt at a podcast. “We” are Barry & Catherine. We met on a BBS (pre-cursor to internet dating) in 1995. When we first met, Barry mentioned that he was going to move to Arizona by the end of the year and Catherine was fine with that because she wasn’t looking for a long term relationship anyway.

Barry moved to Arizona from New York in October and Catherine followed in December. In the few months we had dated the thought was “We get along fine. Let’s move out together.” We’ve been married since 1996.

Our first venture into entrepreneurship, or as we liked to call it “screw this looking for a job stuff. Let’s start our own gigs.” Catherine had been going to school studying massage therapy and Barry, as always, was fixing computers for people and helping them to build websites.

In 2003 after each having a successful business and being members of a barter exchange, we decided to launch our own barter exchange. We were very successful for 10 years until we sold the exchange in favor of concentrating on software development for the barter and trade industry.

In 2009 with a business partner, we created software for the barter industry and sold their exchange a few years later. Barry and Catherine continue to run Barter21 Software (www.BCLSoft.com) and train those who want to start and grow a successful barter exchange.

After many suggestions from friends to create “The Barry and Catherine Show,” a suggestion from a friend about creating a podcast led quickly to the creation of Together 24/7.

A little about our business.

Barter21 is a barter exchange management software created by BCL Soft. The company was launched in 2009 when we became frustrated with the lack of good barter exchange management software. Our passion is working with established exchanges to help them reach the next level as well as helping new exchanges launch and build.

If a thought or a feeling keeps coming up…if multiple people say the same thing, no matter how crazy it sounds, listen. There is a clear direction when you ask a clear question.
